The Dreamer’s Paradox with Katherine Bell
Audio, 58 minutes.
Description:
Katherine speaks about her ideas about approaching dreams as a kind of treasure hunt and what she calls the Dreamer’s Paradox.
After the break we take a comment from engineer Rick Kleffel saying that his favorite author Alan Moore often gets inspiration from his dreams. We are then joined by Steven E. Popp, host of KSQD’s “In The Garden” show, who comes on the air and tells us about a dream in which a huge feline, a cross between a lion and tiger, wreaks great havoc.
This show, episode number 278, was recorded during a live broadcast on September 28, 2024 at KSQD.org, community radio of Santa Cruz.
Can Nightmares Make You a Workplace Supernova? The Unexpected Answer!
Video, 72 minutes.
Description:
Dreams: they have the power to bring about transformation — and provide a leader with a vision of their organization that can inspire a team with compassion and tenderness. In this fascinating chat at The Myth Slayer Cafe, Scott and former NASA astrophysicist and experiential dream coach Katherine Bell discuss the Greek god of the forge, Hephaestus, as a metaphor for how to use dreams — including nightmares — as tools for personal growth and the creation something new from a place of woundedness.
Conscious Care for Those Who Seek Our Guidance
Video, 84 minutes. Katherine is one of three hosts and she speaks first.
Description:
Those who seek spiritual guidance are deeply vulnerable to influence. A cornerstone of the ethical treatment of students and followers is to accept and support their own interpretations of their spiritual experiences.
As conscious practitioners, it is important to recognize that our own histories and blind spots affect our students and followers. Staying vigilant with our own processes and reading clues from our bodies will help us keep sight of these vulnerabilities.
Ethical treatment of our seekers protects us as well as them. We have to learn to live with the uncertainty of never truly knowing what another’s experience means to them.
As leaders, we need to understand the inherent power we hold in the teacher/student or leader/client relationship and strive for conscious attention to these dynamics.
Scott Mason’s Purpose Highway S02, EP43-DREAM ON: Understanding Your Dreams w/ Katherine Bell (Pt 1)
Video, 50 minutes.
Description:
Persephone, Greek Goddess of the Blossom, was kidnapped by the God of the Dead — but reborn as Queen of the Underworld, the surreal land of dreams. How can your own nighttime dreams trigger professional rebirth?
After two years, Scott Mason’s Purpose Highway Podcast arrives at its most thought-provoking destination yet: the exploration of dreams as a lens for reframing your journey to professional freedom.
For former NASA astrophysicist-turned-experiential dream worker Katherine Bell, what happens when you close your eyes at night is much more than exciting fodder for breakfast chit-chat. Your dreams are literally a journey to a symbolic underworld. They open doors not only to new professional opportunities, but to connection with the very cosmic forces that she spent an entire career studying.
Scott Mason’s Purpose Highway S02, EP43-DREAM ON: Understanding Your Dreams w/ Katherine Bell (Pt 2)
Video, 52 minutes.
Description:
What appears in your dreams at night? How do these myth-like visions relate to your professional choices? Can they really set you free?
After two years of exploring the nexus of purpose, myth, and freedom, “Scott Mason’s Purpose Highway” Podcast has made its final stop — and the destination is a doozy. Listening to the second part of a wide-ranging, but unfathomably deep, conversion with astrophysicist-turned-dream coach Katherine Bell, I felt intellectually stimulated, contemplative, and, above all else, called to action.
Because, like the mythical Oracle that your dreams really are, those nighttime visions exist to connect you with the parts of yourself that you might not otherwise be able to see or accept. How you treat your dreams is, therefore, a reflection of how you treat yourself. Consider exploring your dreams if you feel disconnected from your career path, professional life, or business. You may be surprised by what they tell you.

Fire Dreams Helping from behind the Scenes
Audio, 53 min. Interview starts at 3:45.
Do you believe that your dreams serve a purpose, even when you don’t remember them? Do dreams help you somehow, even if you don’t “work” with them?
This is a podcast interview that Katherine Bell did with Leilani Navar of The Dreamer’s Den less than a month after devastating wildfires tore through her home community of Bonny Doon during which she was evacuated for two and a half weeks. Katherine talks about how her dreams were a valuable part of her sanity system and gives examples of how they helped her return from her dissociated “super hero” state to a more embodied, feeling place. She also speaks about the traumas that got her into dreamwork in the first place and about her theories of dreaming as an integral part of our natural emotional immune system.
From Studying Stars to Studying Dreams with Katherine Bell
Audio, 58 minutes.
Description:
We turn the mic around today and Katherine is interviewed by the host of Narrative Species, music creator and engineer for the show Rick Kleffel. Katherine starts by talking about her history first growing up in a family of six scientists and then as an astrophysicist getting her PhD from UCSC and working at NASA in Mountain View for 11 years. We talk about the evolution of her focus from thoughts to feelings as she moved from science to dreams.
Katherine describes her experience of almost dying in 2005 because she was able to successfully suppress her feelings until her appendix ruptured and how this lead her to go deeper into her dreams. Katherine recommends accessing emotions through bodily sensations rather than using labels and describes the parts of the brain that are active during dreams. She encourages listeners to set up their own dream groups and describes how difficult it can be to distill the chaos of dreams into a concrete dream report.
We take a call from Chris from Felton who was a member of Katherine’s original dream group which started in the 1990s. Chris asks Katherine about her vision for the future. She finishes by talking about the book about dreams that she is working on.
